Yelahanka is an area in Bangalore with a rich heritage, that has a history of more than 500 years. It is one of the oldest townships in Karnataka and was part of the Vijayanagara Empire. Today the place is primarily a residential area in the northern periphery of the city. Yelahanka is separated from downtown Bangalore by 14 kilometres, but this distance doesn’t seem long, thanks to the new Airport Road.
The Bangalore International Airport which is just 20 kilometres north of Yelahanka has helped in the rapid development and expansion of the locality. The area also houses the Rail Wheel Factory (formerly Wheel & Axle Plant), Astra Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, Gogo International, Federal-Mogul Goetze (India) Limited, Ranflex India Pvt. Ltd. and Hobel Flexibles Inc. There are also many renowned educational institutions here such as Ryan International School, Delhi Public School, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute Of Technology, BMS Institute Of Technology, Seshadripuram College, Reva Engineering College, Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, NMIT and famous medical colleges like Infant Jesus College Of Nursing and SB College Of Nursing.
There is also an Air Force Station in Yelahanka which furnishes the requirement needed for the activities conducted by the Indian Air Force. An Air Show is held here every two years. This show is attended by thousands of people from all over the city, and other parts of the country as well.
