New Town, Kolkata

Overview

New Town, is a fast-growing planned satellite city and a neighbourhood of Kolkata. It is partly in North located 24 Parganas district and South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. It comes under supervision of The New Town Kolkata Development Authority. This new IT and residential hubs is being developed on the north-eastern edge of Kolkata. It consists of areas of two past villages Rajarhat and Bhangar. The area mainly consisted of huge acres of cultivable lands and water bodies, which have been acquired and developed in a planned manner. The locality has been also declared as a Solar City by the previous UPA Government at the centre and now the initiatives are being taken to declare this city as Smart Green City. With rise in population, two peripheral business districts have also developed in the greater Kolkata region - Sector-v, Bidhannagar also known as Salt Lake City and New Town. Most of the companies present in the area till recently have maintained region headquarters in the city’s central business district (CBD) in central Kolkata. The locality has close proximity to NH12. This locality was enabled with 10.5 km of Wi-Fi Zone connecting Main Arterial Road to the airport to sector V, which also make it India’s first Wi-Fi road connectivity.

Connectivity

Transport facilities are good in the locality. The main mode of transport includes air conditioned, non-AC govt and private buses, taxi, auto rickshaw, and e-rickshaw.

Major roads like VIP Road and the EM Bypass which connects the locality to east and south Kolkata. There is great connectivity to the prime area of Salt Lake and the Sector-V IT hub.

Bengal’s first AC battery-powered buses running in New Town. This is first of its kind in the state of West Bengal. These buses are running in Action Area 1 and 2. These buses are covering routes which have not been covered by other buses yet.

The locality is very close to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport which is located at a distance of 11.8 km via NH 12.

Bidhannagar Road, Dumdum Junction, Sealdah Junction are its nearby railway stations. However, Sealdah is the major railway station from where one get the trains for different routes. Sealdah Junction is located at a distance of 13.6 km while Howrah Station is at a distance of 17.5 km via NH 12.

Dumdum Metro Station is the nearest metro station (Phase-1 of Kolkata Metro) which is located at a distance of 12.5 km via NH 12.

Factors for past growth

Its proximity to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Howrah Station along with major IT Hubs of Sector-v have been a plus point, driving residential as well as rental demand in the locality.

Factors for future growth

Upcoming East-West Corridor of Kolkata Metro Phase-2 will have a station there, this will surely create the rental demand in the locality in the coming days.

Under-construction, The Biswa Bangla Gate at Rabindra Tirtha crossing in New Town, popularly known as Kolkata Gate, is expected to be opened up for general public before the Durga Puja.

New Town Kolkata has been added in the PM’s Smart City mission list.

There is also a plan to extend the Circular Railway from Bidhannagar Road (Ultadanga) to Newtown via Lake Town and Salt Lake.

New Town is home to number of educational institutions such as Delhi Public School Newtown, Shemrock Whizkids Play School New Town, The Newtown School, Kolkata, Kidzee Newtown, Jatragachi Pranabananda High School, Jothbhim Primary School, Narayana School among few.

Some of the nearby malls catering the daily needs of the residents of Newtown are Galaxy Mall, Centrus Mall, DLF Galleria, Axis Mall, Salt Lake City Centre, Downtown Mall, Uniworld Downtown Mall etc.

Healthcare facilities are also good in the localities. Some of the reputed hospitals in the locality are Ohio Hospital, AMRI Hospital, Apex General Hospital, Renaissance Hospital, ILS Hospital, Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Flemming Hospital to name a few.
