The locality is bound by Saligramam in the east, Koyambedu to the north and Vanagaram to the west, and Ramapuram to the south. Natural gas was discovered near Virugambakkam in 1966. To date, Virugambakkam is the only known source of natural gas in Chennai city apart from Avadi. The Virugambakkam Canal separates Virugambakkam from suburbs such as Koyambedu, which lie towards the interior. The canal runs for about 6 through the suburbs of Choolaimedu, Arumbakkam, and Vadapalani before entering Virugambakkam. This locality has extended for about 2 kilometers from Avichi Higher Sec. School in Arcot Road to Valasarawakkam. Famous localities of this place include Madhuban, Janaki Enclave, Valasaravakkam, State bank Colony and Baskar colony. Virugambakkam is close to the Arcot Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Poonamallee High Road, and the Grand Trunk Road. Kaaliamman Koil Street which connects Virugambakkam and Koyambedu. Arcot Road is the only arterial road which passes through the souther-edge of the locality.

Virugambakkam is served by the MTC buses which connect the locality to the others parts of the city. MTC stops nearest to the locality are Saligramam and Chinmaya Nagar.

It enjoys excellent connectivity to the Chennai International Airport which is situated at a distance of 13.2 km via Chennai-Nagapattinam Highway and Chennai-Trichy Highway.

Kodambakkam and Mambalam are the two nearby railway station to Virugambakkam. However, Mambalam is the nearest and major suburban railway station which is located about 5.4 km away. The Central Railway Station (13.4 km) can be reached within 30 minutes via the Poonamalle High Road.

Koyambedu Metro Station (3.2 km) and CMBT Metro Station (2.7 km) of Chennai Metro Rail are not very far from the locality.
