Overview

Virar, situated in the northern parts of Mumbai is a developed suburbs. It is a part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It is also a part of Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation in Palghar District of Maharashtra. It is a railway station on the western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway Network. It is a terminus station. It is a very crowded area among other adjacent localities like Vasai Road because it is a major tourist spot of Mumbai. Virar is divided into two (Virar East and Virar West) by a railway line. But the city has seen a lot of development in the past 10 years. The growth of Virar is yet to be seen in full as the quadrupling of the railway line between Borivali and Virar has just taken place in 2007. There are various housing and road transport development projects initiated by the corporation with the help of MMRDA, Mumbai. The skywalk in the west section of the city was one of the first amongst the many skywalks that were built near all the railway stations of Mumbai. Nalasopara, Nalasopara East, Vasai, Vasai East, Dahisar, Naigaon, Shirgaon are its neighbouring localities. Virar is 72 km away from Mumbai while Navi Mumbai is 75.6 km via NH48. Thane is located at a distance of 49 km via NH48.

 

Connectivity

It has excellent road and rail connectivity. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is located at a distance of 59 km via Western Express Highway and NH 48.

Veer Savarkar Road and Jivdani Road are its arterial roads which further connects Virar to NH48 via Chandansar Road.

Virar, Nallasopara, Vasai Road, Vaitarna, Naigaon are its nearby railway stations. However, Virar is the nearest railway station to Virar located at a distance of 2 km via Tirupati Nagar Road.

 

Proposed & Planned Infra

Proposed Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project.

Proposed 122-hectare Wadala Truck Terminal to be developed as Mumbai’s third official CBD (Central Business District), after Nariman Point and BKC.

The proposed Maharashtra government’s ambitious Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor is likely to start soon, which is set to halve the time of travel between Virar and Alibaug, has been divided into two phases.

The proposed Versova-Bandra sea link (VBSL) will be extended to Virar.

Planning Commission plans 2 more lines between Virar, Dahanu to decongest Mumbai Rail Traffic.

 

Infra Development (Social & Physical)

Due to its proximity to Vasai, Virar has access to all social amenities such as educational institutions, healthcare, malls, theatres, banks, markets and temples. Some of the educational institutions include St. Xavier’s High School, Royal Academy School, Tree House Play Group, Matrix Academy School, Muljibhai Mehta International School, M G M School, National English High School among few.

Healthcare facilities are also good in the localities. Some of the multispeciality hospitals providing facilities to the residents of Vira are Vijay Vallabh Hospital, Divekar Hospital, Shree Balaji Hospital, Bhusan Hospital, Riddhi Vinayak Multispeciality Hospital, Vijaylaxmi Hospital, Sushrut Hospital, Alliance Hospital etc.
