Velachery, Chennai

Velachery is located in the southern part of Chennai. It was earlier known as Vedasreni which in the Tamil language means Abode of Vedas. It is one of the most important townships in the city because of development of IT companies in the vicinity. The locality is also a prime residential area.

The name Vedasreni was kept from the Chola period. It was also known as Vedanarayanapuram during the same period. Along with time, the place was also named with a Tamil word which means King or the Leader that also denotes Lord Sri Narasimha Swami. Then later, it was named Velachery after the word which means a place where people can gather and worship the Lord.

The areas that surround Velachery are Taramani in the east, Adambakkam in the northwest and Pallikaranai Marshland in the south. The major landmark in the locality is the presence of IIT Madras in the north-east. Some of the other localities in the neighborhood are Madippakkam, Guindy, Adyar, and Thiruvanmiyur.

Some of the educational institutes in close vicinity are Gurunanak College, Jerusalem College of Engineering, The Perumal Engineering College, Balaji Dental College & Hospital, etc. Velachery comes under Adyar zone and is the 153rd ward. Major companies nearby are Tata Consultancy Services, ZOHO Corp, AllSec Technologies Ltd., TeleData and Sutherland Global Services.

It is at a distance of 12 km from Chennai International Airport and 3 km from Velachery MRTS Station. The Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) has come up between Tirumailai and Velachery with its second phase from November 2007. There are three roads which connect Velachery to other parts of the city. They are Velachery Main Road, Tharamani Link Road, and Velachery Bypass Road.

As the locality is booming with IT industries close by, real estate sector is also catching up demand due to the same. Many upcoming projects are to be seen in this part.
