Kolathur is one of the busiest locality of north Chennai. It comes under the jurisdiction of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). Pattaravakkam, Korattur, Villivakkam, Perambur Carriage Works are the nearby railway stations to Kolathur. However, Villivakkam is the nearest railway station which is about 2.9 km via Red Hills Road.

MTC operational buses link Kolathur to the other parts of the Chennai city. Vinayakapuram, Kumaran Nagar, Poompuhar Nagar, and Srinivasa Nagar are its nearest bus stands.

Phase-1 of Chennai Metro Rail with one of its route Thirumangalam - Nehru Park is passing through the locality of Kolathur having a station Thirumangalam.
