Kalwa, Thane

Overview

Kalwa, situated in the south-eastern parts of Thane. This locality comes under the supervision of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). Kalwa is a railway station on the Central Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. Some parts of Kalwa are Kharegaon, Vaghoba Nagar, Jama Masjid Road, Budhaji Nagar, Bhola Nagar, Ishwarnagar,  Aai Nagar, Vitava, Parsik Nagar, Rana nagar, Janki Nagar 1-2, Manisha Nagar, Gawate Wadi, Gholai Nagar, Surya Nagar, Gunsagar Nagar. Earlier. Kalwa Bridge was the only bridge which connect Kalwa with Thane but a new bridge has been constructed to replace the old one and to ease the traffic congestion faced on the old bridge. It connects the region of Navi Mumbai from Airoli onwards to Thane. Rajiv Gandhi Medical College and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital which is run by Thane Municipal Corporation is located in Kalwa. The location houses an Olympic sized Yashwant Rama Salvi Swimming Pool that hosts district and state level championships every year. It is well known for the car-shed, as the country’s first passenger train running between Thane and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Bombay) has been manufactured over here. Since the old Mumbai- Pune Expressway (NH-4) which has been renumbered NH48 passes through the area, the location enjoys easy connectivity to the rest of Maharashtra. Other prominent areas located close to Kalwa are Majiwada, Naupada, Thane East, Mulund West, Mumbra, Kausa, Kolshet, Thane, Manpada, Thane West, Diva, Airoli, Kopri etc. A recently open grand biodiversity garden At Dharavi.

Connectivity

Locality is surrounded by NH160 and NH 48 to its north and AH 47 and NH 48 to its East. Old Mumbai-Pune Highway which passes through the locality connects it to the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is located at a distance of 28.5 km via Jogeshwari - Vikhroli Link Road and Eastern Express Highway, can be accessed in less than an hour.

Kalwa, Thane Junction, Mumbra, and Mulund are its nearby railway stations. However, kalwa is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 500 meter. Thane Junction is also located at a distance of 5.3 km via Pune-Mumbai Highway.

The Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) has started a new route to connect Kalwa to Retibunder. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses also ply through the locality.

Proposed & Planned Infra

Proposed new Airoli-Kalwa corridor (8 km) under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project 3 (MUTP 3). This corridor will help to provide connectivity from the northern side of Kalyan and beyond to the Navi Mumbai international airport. Kalwa station will have an elevated station like Sandhurst Road on the Harbour track.

As a part of the Smart City project, Thane will be developing the 32 km coastline stretches from Diva to Gaimukh. Kalwa- Shastri Nagar has been added under it.

Proposed Phase-2 of Water Transport Project (Ferry), the route of the Thane-Mumbai waterway will be Saket (Thane)-Kalwa- Vitawa-Mith Bunder- Airoli-Vashi- Trombay- Elephanta- Ferry Wharf- Gateway of India.

Proposed 6-km freeway between Shilphata & Kalwa to ensure a smooth and faster dispersal of traffic between Thane, Mumbai and Panvel, Pune on the old highway.

Planned new Kopri creek bridge, which will connect Navi Mumbai to Thane.

Factors for past growth

Due to its connectivity to the Navi Mumbai and Thane, residents over here can easily access all the basic amenities along with the entertainment and leisure activities. At the same time, Thane-Belapur Highway and the Eastern Expressway are the added advantages for people travelling from Thane and suburbs to their offices in this belt.

Its proximity to Thane Railway Station, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport along with major IT Parks of Thane such as ThaneOne Corporate Business IT Park, Ashar IT Park, Raheja It Parks have been a plus point for Kalwa, driving residential demand and development in the locality.

Factors for future growth

Some infra projects proposed by state govt such as new Airoli-Kalwa corridor, Kalwa- Shastri Nagar added under Smart City mission, Phase-2 of Water Transport Project, Under-construction Kharegaon rail overbridge, 6-km freeway between Shilphata & Kalwa, and new Kopri creek bridge will boost the property price in the locality and open the way for rental demand.

Kalwa possesses best-in-class infrastructural facilities: It has many reputed schools and educational institutions of various national and international boards in its vicinity. Some of them are Saraswati Vidyalaya High School and Junior College of Science, Rainbow Preschool, Smt.
