Overview
Chengalpattu, formerly known as Chingleput, is a suburb located on south-east of the GST Road in Kanchipuram. Chengalpattu is the 2nd largest town in the district after Kanchipuram. It is the headquarters of the Chengalpattu Taluk of the Kanchipuram District. Chennai City is located at a driving distance of 55 km from the locality. Chengalpattu Government Hospital is a landmark and the largest government hospital in this district. The Hospital has its own medical college. Other prominent localities located close to it are Chettipunyam, Paranur, Anjur, Karumbakkam, Ammapettai, Mamandur, Salavakkam, Edamachi, Kattankulathur, Thiruporur etc. It is an important commercial center. It has a medical college and other colleges affiliated with the University of Madras. There are several modern industries around Chengalpattu, due to the town's proximity to Chennai and its frequent connectivity to other places through rail and road. Melmaruvathur is about 35 km from Chengalpattu. To reach Tindivanam, which is 69 km away, it takes about 1.3 hours through GST Road or NH 45.

Connectivity
Chengalpattu Railway Station, generally known as CGL, is one of the major railway junctions of the Southern Railway and is a nationally important halt. Other nearby railway stations are Chengalpattu Junction, Paranur, Singaperumal Koil, Reddipalayam, and Ottivakkam. However, Chengalpattu Junction is the nearest and major railway station which is located at a distance of 1 km via Ullavur - Chengalpattu Road.

Chengalpattu is well connected by road and rail. State-owned MTC buses ply through the locality and connect it to the other parts of the Chennai City. TN State Transport Corporation has frequent services from Tambaram and Chengalpattu to interior villages.

The Chennai Airport lies just 38 km north of the town and can be reached in about 1 hour by road.

Factors for past growth
GST Road and the Vandalur - Kelambakkam Road became hub of real estate activities due to the train services.  Moreover, the proposed bus terminus on the GST Road would add the momentum to its further growth.

Factors for future growth
Its proximity to International Airport along with nearby major IT Hubs have been a plus point for Chengalpattu, driving residential demand and development in the locality.

There are several modern industries around Chengalpattu, due to the town's proximity to Chennai and its frequent connectivity to other places through rail and road. The upcoming infra development such as construction of third railway track between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, proposed 330-acres Medipark in Chengalpattu, proposed Chennai - Salem Highway, the proposed 36-km elevated corridor project from Chennai airport to Chengalpattu, and proposed bus terminus at Kilambakkam on GST Road once operational will change the face of the Chengalpattu’s realty market in the days to come.

It also houses some famous colleges in its vicinity.
