Overview
Besant Nagar is a top-notch locality of South Chennai, named after the famous theosophist Annie Besant. It is a well-planned locality developed by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) in late 1970s and early 1980s. It comes under the jurisdiction of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). It is located on the coast of Bay of Bengal to the east, and surrounded by Thiruvanmiyur to the south, Adyar to the west and Adyar Estuary to the north. Other prominent locality situated close to Besant Nagar are Adyar, Taramani, Pattinapakkam, Mylapore, Velachery, Guindy, T Nagar, Nungambakkam, Palavakkam, Madipakkam, Nangainallur among others. The establishment of Central Government Staff Quarters (CPWD) has contributed to the locality’s development. The Chennao International Airport and Chennai Central Railway Station are located at a distance of 15.4 km and 13.2 km from this area respectively. The locality is noted to be among the most expensive residential neighborhoods in the city. Besant Nagar has always been known for its broad, tree-lined roads, especially the area around the Theosophical Society. The Besant Nagar Beach is a decent beach to visit in Chennai. It is a popular beach for the local residents. The Arulmigu Mahalakshmi Temple is located on the shores of Besant Nagar Beach.
