An Overview

Navi Mumbai is a planned township or city in the Maharashtra state of India. It lies off the west coast of India. It is formerly called “New Bombay”. Navi Mumbai is divided into South and North Navi Mumbai. The population of Navi Mumbai as of 2011 is 1,119,477. As Mumbai is the commercial capital of India attracting many citizens, they thought of building a new city and that is “New Bombay”. It is situated across two districts, Thane and Raigad. The surrounding localities of Navi Mumbai are Kharghar, Belapur, Panvel, Seawoods, Vashi, Nerul etc. Nerul is said to be the “Queen” of Navi Mumbai as it is the most populated nodes of the city. It is famous not only for its residential or commercial centre but also for its hillocks.

History

Navi Mumbai was formed on 17 December 1991 by the “Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC)”. The planning of bringing up Navi Mumbai started by 1971. The “City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO)” established it in 1971. The city was formed when Th86 villages were acquired by the Maharashtra Government. The Major parts of Navi Mumbai are Panvel, Uran and Thane taluk. The modern nodes like Panvel, Kalamboli, Kharghar, Kamothe of Southern NaviMumbai grew massively with its infrastructure.

Economy, Industry and Employment

The economic growth of Navi Mumbai was great after 1990 when they started the commuter railway line (Mankhurd to Vashi) and agriculture production market. Navi Mumbai is a home for business hubs, multinational corporations, educational institutions. The real estate is also growing rapidly in Navi Mumbai. There are only two economic inputs available for Navi Mumbai. They are

Demographics

The total population of Navi Mumbai according to 2011 census is 1,119,477. The average literacy rate of Navi Mumbai city is 89.62 per cent of which male and female literacy was 92.60 and 86.03 per cent. The sex ratio of Navi Mumbai city is 837 females per 1000 males. Children form 11.56% of the total population of Navi Mumbai City.

Connectivity

Roads

There is only one Expressway that starts at Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai. The bus connectivity is served by NMMT (Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport) and BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport). NMMT AC buses are also available. These buses all over Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi.

Rails

The train connectivity is served by “Mumbai Suburban Railway”. The major Suburban stations are Panvel, Nerul, Belapur, and Vashi. Panvel is the biggest and the busiest station of Navi Mumbai.

Metro

The metro has been planned with six lines network out of which four lines will be constructed by CIDCO in south Navi Mumbai and two lines to be constructed by NMMC. One line connects to CBD Belapur and Pendhar Village and another line connects to Taloja and Khandeshwar. The four lines will be completed and operated by 2023.

Air

“Navi Mumbai International Airport” is the new connecting airport that is yet to start in Navi Mumbai and the airport will be operated by 2020. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport which is 30km away from the city.
